Inspired by Bomba, the music and dance of the African slaves in the Loiza, PR area in the 17th Century. Bomba was used by the African slaves to express themselves and tell their stories of sorrow and homesickness for the life they left behind, and the one they are forced to endure. The white dress symbolizes the purity of the soul, which they believed was needed to pray to their Gods and ask for protection. They also wore or carried bright and colorful necklaces or handkerchiefs; in the color representative of the God they were seeking protection from.
